“They stopped talking,” Nathaniel said quietly. “They stopped… being themselves.”

Rose nodded.

“Because no one stayed long enough in the quiet with them.”

Nathaniel looked down.

For the first time—

he realized he hadn’t either.

“I don’t know how to do that,” he admitted.

It was the most honest thing he had said in years.

Rose gave a small smile.
