Frank’s name appeared on the screen.
Without thinking, she opened the message.
“Hi sweetheart. I’ll soon ditch that pathetic wife.”
Whitney stopped walking.
Her heart dropped instantly.
Frank had not called her “sweetheart” in years.
Then she noticed the wallpaper on the phone. It was not hers.
This was someone else’s phone.
Another message appeared.
“Where are you, Devin? Did you leave already?”
Then another:
“Don’t worry. I’ll deal with Whitney after my birthday.”
And another:
“She’s always at the gym like it’ll help.”
Whitney suddenly realized the truth.
She had accidentally picked up the phone belonging to the woman her husband was having an affair with.
Her hands trembled as she opened the full message thread.
“She’s too dense to take a hint.”
“The kids look just like her. I can’t stand it.”

Whitney felt like the ground beneath her had disappeared.
But instead of panicking, she quietly pulled out her own phone and photographed every message.
The Woman at the Front Desk
Whitney walked back into the gym.
At the front desk stood a tall woman with brown hair tied into a loose bun. She looked worried.
Whitney recognized her immediately. They had seen each other around the gym many times but had never spoken much.
When the woman saw the phone in Whitney’s hand, relief spread across her face.
“Oh thank goodness. You found it.”
Whitney handed the phone over calmly.
The woman paused for a second and looked at her carefully.
“Are you okay?”
Whitney forced a small smile.
“Long day.”
The woman nodded and walked away, unaware that everything had changed.
The Decision Whitney Made
During the drive home, Whitney’s mind raced.
Part of her wanted to call Frank immediately and scream at him.
But then she thought about her children.
She thought about Spencer’s silence at breakfast. About Mia calling her pretty. About the kind of example she wanted to set for them.
Whitney did not want Frank to twist the story later and call her unstable or dramatic.
She wanted control over how this ended.
By the time she pulled into the driveway, she had made her decision.
