When the paramedics carried Lucía, the lights in the neighboring houses were already on. Doña Gloria, the neighbor across the street, muttered loudly so everyone could hear:
“I always said Diego couldn’t raise a child alone.”
Another neighbor took out his cell phone.
“Four days abandoned. What a heartless woman.”
Elena clenched her jaw. Something didn’t add up. A man planning to leave didn’t leave behind his keys, his papers, his half-washed clothes, or a list of urgent medicine.
But before he could say anything, Lucía fainted in his arms.
That same night, videos of the ambulance began circulating on Facebook. Within hours, all of Ecatepec was calling Diego Morales a “monster.”
